... then, both as a memorial to our dead and as a symbol of our rebirth. It is written to show the world the spirit of the Jew. As important as mere personal survival is to each and every one of us, the survival of an idea, of a faith, of a religion, of the right to be different is more important than even life itself. Fach time we take this Book in hand we reconfirm our faith that we as Jews can not be obliterated from this earth. For, no matter how many of us arc gassed, or how many of us arc cremated, so long as one of us survives, or so long as one of our hooks remains or one of our ideas endures, wc survive and our culture, our heritage, our tradition is transmitted, as if by a lit candle, from one generation to the next. And so, the story of Suwałk is written to acquaint the living ...

... series of changes. It was finally applied to mean organized leadership of the Jewish community. In Baranow, "Kohol" consisted of a number of members whose presiding officer was the Rosh Hakohol. This body was elected periodically by umver-sal male suffrage. The periods preceding elections were marked by heated arguments between the factions, which occasionally reached face slapping proportions. Moreover, the elections were not always conducted in the best democratic traditions. Since the law prescribed that the elections were to be certified by the Starosta (head of the county) the party favored by the government {the Rov's Party) usually won. An election which gave the Zionist parly a majority was invalidated, a new Kohol appointed, and new elections ordered by the Starosta. The functions ...

It was a big square building, surrounded by a spacious yard. It consisted of two floors with a tower in the center. In the tower was set a clock, visible from all four sides of the town. The tower also bore the crest of Graff Potocki. a five angled cross. Surrounding the base of the townhall. as well as in the courtyard, there were many stores. Most of them belonged to Jewish store-keepers. The second floor of the townhall served as a highschool. Further west, between the houses stood the Greek Catholic church. Behind it was the Arme-nians church and towards the south stood the Catholic church. Close to the south side of the Catholic church stood ...
