It was thus that the communities of Staradum, Chernigov Homel (in White Russia) in the Poltava Province Luben, Perias-lav, Dirasin, Barishevka, Lachvitz, Borisfal and others went up in smoke. The worst slaughter, however, occurred in the fortified cities of Podolia and Volynia, where the Jews had hoped to find safety. The bloody pogroms at Ncmirov, Tultchin, Bar, Ostra, Polona, Zaslav and Old Constantine were led by the radical cossack leader and fanatical anti-Semite, Maxim Krivanos, a former merchant. He appeared on the political arena in July of 1648 and died at the end of that year. In the short time he was active, however, he man-aged to kill tens of thousands.
