... went on until 1.9.43, when the western Ghetto was completely liquidated and only 150 people were left in tlie Eastern Ghetto. I was one of the remaining few (probably owing to the intevention of Engineer Schultz). Once a rumour spread that the remaining camp was to 10י immediately wiped out. I managed to leave camp and escaped to engineer Schultz, who had once told me: "Schneeweiss, if things shouid be really critical, come to me." I lived at his place alongside his German workers for two to three weeks, at the old nail factory. In the meantime, however, the rumour was denied, and I contacted Mr. Eisen-berg who enabled me to return to the camp which was run by the "Ordnungsdienst" (the Gltetto Police). I believe that Szupke, the Ghetto Com-mander, knew nothing at all about the whole ...

As our shadows flit across the cinema screens, sensitive ladies will wipe their eyes with their per-fumed handkerchiefs and weep for us : "Oh ! the poor creatures ! ’’ We know: we shall never get out of here alive. The Devil himself has written on the gate of this inferno : "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here ! ’’ We want to confess, a "Shma Israel" for the coming generations. It will be the confession of a tragic generation, one that did not betray its destiny, a generation whose feet weakened by rickets crumpled under the heavy weights of the torments which the times have piled upon their shoulders. And so : we are not interested here in minute details or figures, the collection of dry data. Others will do it without ...

... "Hatima Tova" (a Favorable Signature) Minha, said before the final meal, is gone to on foot, earlier than usual, and the festive clothes are worn in its honor. Though it is still quite early, the Yom Kippur atmosphere is palpable. When "Shmo-neh-esreh" is said, though it is still just an ordinary week day, the people confess and say "A1 Het", just in case they might get drunk or, God forbid, choke on their food during the last meal, and have no chance to confess in full. The tables in the synagogue are loaded with "bowls" for collections, with a note in each bowl explaining the purpose of the contribution. The central bowl bears the inscription, written in large letters : GREAT CHARITY. Nobody knows who has promoted this bowl to its task and who it is that determines that the charity ...
