... . Of these the most important were Reb Mottish Eckstein, a Hassid of Djikov; Noah Schapira, Asher Silber, Mechel Biermann, Nathan Kanncr, Zangen, Freilich, Joseph Schenblum and several others whose names I cannot remember at present. Moses Alshech, a sixteenth century rabbi at Safed, also wrote commentaries, which must have had a specific appeal to Reb Naftali; the name of Alshech would ordinarily not be twinned with the name of Rashi ...

... immediately following the First World War, "wandering stars" would appear in Mikulince. These were enter- tainers who traveled from town to town disseminating Yiddish theater and art. I still remember the elderly actor Shnek. He was one of Goldfaden’s pupils and a member of his theater troupe. In the early 420’s, he came to Mikulince and performed together with his wife in a program of dramatic readings, monologues, jokes and old-style songs. The performances took place in private homes. A stage made of wooden planks would be set up and oil lamps would provide lighting. For a small price of admission, the audience would watch and listen in amazement and with great enthusiasm. These performances were a rarity, and no other forms of entertainment existed in town. Later on, the youngsters ...
