... wonder-ful feeling he gave me... When, at the end of 1941, after the Germans had captured Eastern Poland, I returned to the shtetl, I was eager to meet Reb Hirsheleh, to speak with him and take courage from his deep faith. I never did, for he had gone "underground", living all the time in hiding. When the oppressors ordered all the shtetl’s Jews to cut off their beards, threatening death to all who disobeyed, he ... and his wife Pessia, the sons and daughters — all relaxed and engaged in enjoyable conversation. Anyone who happened to open their door was cordially invited to join the company, with the warmth of which only this family was capable. Avraham Levite / SHLOMO ZISSEL ADLER licensed to sell "vodka". These two products — vodka and tobacco — were a government monopoly, and the ...

Twenty persons were crowded into one room. It was no wonder that epidemics killed hundreds of us.. The ghetto was closed and without a special permit, it was forbidden to leave it.This brought about the breakdown in the barter business with the peasants of the neighborhood. We also lost at once most of our hiding places and the advantage of escaping from the town in time of danger. The next "action" was not late in coming. By the month of January 1943. 3 actions, each one more cruel than the other, had taken place. We were only a small group of people left in the ghetto, a mere remnant of the Jews of our town. At the be-ginning of February ...

... beginning to learn Chumosh was an occasion for celebration. Candies and cookies were to be distributed among the classmates and on the Sabbath neighbors and family were invited to share in the celebration. The child sat in Cheder all day. Contrary to supposition, it was not too strenuous on the child.
